How to Make a Natural Log Feeder for Your Backyard

Do you love watching birds visit your backyard, but want to attract even more? Building a natural log feeder for your feathered friends may be just what you need. Not only is it an easy DIY project, but it also adds a rustic touch to your outdoor decor. Follow these simple steps to create your own all-natural bird feeder.

Step 1: Find a Suitable Log

The first step in creating a natural log feeder is finding the perfect log. Look for a log that is at least 12 inches long and 3-6 inches in diameter. The log should have some bark still intact and preferably have a few branches or knots to give birds something to perch on while they eat.

Step 2: Hollow Out the Log

Once you have found the perfect log, it's time to hollow it out. Use a drill with a spade bit to drill into the center of the log. Slowly work your way through the log, creating a hollow space big enough to hold seeds and nuts.

Step 3: Create Perches

Next, use a small saw or chisel to create perches for the birds. Cut small notches into the log where birds can perch while they eat. Be careful not to make the notches too deep or wide, as this can make it difficult for birds to balance while they eat.

Step 4: Fill with Seeds and Nuts

Now that your natural log feeder is complete, it's time to fill it with birdseed and nuts. You can use any type of birdseed or nut mix that you prefer. Black oil sunflower seeds are a popular choice as they are loved by many types of birds.

Step 5: Hang Your Feeder

The final step is to hang your natural log feeder in a tree or off a shepherd's hook. Choose a location that is easily visible from inside your home so you can watch the birds come and go. Sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds of the various species that will visit your new feeder!
